How does a sale work?

From declaring the purchase through to the reviews: who does what, and what each of you gets at every step. Every action notifies the other person by Pitboard message and by e-mail.

Buyer

I declare the purchase

Found what you wanted and agreed the deal by message? Click “Buy this item” on the listing: the deal starts and shows in “My deals” for both of you.

✓ The seller gets a message + an e-mail
2
Seller

I confirm the sale

You confirm that you really are selling to THIS buyer. The listing automatically switches to “Sold”: nobody else can declare themselves the buyer by mistake.

✓ The buyer gets a message + an e-mail

Buyer, then seller

We settle the payment

For shipping, payment is usually made BEFORE dispatch (PayPal with buyer protection recommended, or bank transfer). For a handover in person, it's often done at the exchange, in cash for instance. The accepted methods are shown on the listing and the deal. The buyer clicks “I've paid” once the money is sent; the seller clicks “Payment received” once it's in.

✓ Each is notified by message + email

I ship or hand over the item

Parcel posted or handed over in person at the club: confirm the shipping in “My deals”. The buyer then knows it’s on its way.

✓ The buyer gets a message + an e-mail

I confirm the item arrived

The item has arrived and matches the listing? Confirm “received, as described”. The deal is complete. If it's a garage car, it moves automatically to the buyer's garage.

✓ The seller gets a message + an e-mail

Both of you

We rate each other

You each leave the other a rating (stars + comment). That’s what builds trust on the classifieds: people buy more readily from a well-rated seller. A reminder e-mail goes out after 2 days if the rating is still missing.

✓ You each get an e-mail about the review you received
Need to cancel?

As long as receipt hasn’t been confirmed, both the buyer and the seller can cancel the deal from “My deals”. The other person is notified and the listing becomes available again.

Safety tips

Go for a handover in person at the club whenever you can. For a shipment, prefer a payment with protection (PayPal with buyer protection) and keep proof of postage. If a listing looks suspicious, use the report button: the club committee and the Pitboard team are alerted.
